Hello everyone, I was looking at some pics of the old NASA Peterbilts 351s on the public fotki and ATHS web sites. It is a nice challenge to build a model of one of those. But I cannot find a pic or info of the rear part of the trucks. I mean... what drive axles they have, what kind of suspension, what is the wheel base... and what is it there behind the cab? If anyone can help me with a pic or some info, it would be appreciated. Thanks a lot. Jarda

A time ago I asked this question and since I didn´t get any reply, I searched around the net a bit more. And I found that only a handful of people had a chance to meet these trucks in person. No wonder that I didn´t get any info here. Now I have answers to most of my questions but there is still one essential thing unknown to me. What is the wheel base of the tractor and what is the length of the trailer? My eye is not experienced enough to estimate these figures from the picture. But maybe someone can. The BBC is 127, the hood is extended. But that is all I know. Can somebody estimate the wheel base and length of the trailer out of these pictures? Thanks, Jarda

Bought new about 1967, these needlenose 351STL6x6 models for NASA and have been in continuous use since new. Besides the 12V71 Detriot engines, these trucks have 9 speed Roadranger transmissions, all wheel drive and a 2 speed transfer case. Wheelbase was "standard OTR". The original cabs were changed out in the ‘80’s or ‘90’s and now sport the Corvette dashboard. Pete also built 351L 6x6's for work in the Hawaiian sugar cane fields which had the same style fenders. 351L are also the standard 6x6 in the 70' logging industry. The trailer is based on M-295 series trailers which were generally 35 to 38 foot long This is a photo of the interior of the one auctioned of in 2010. Paul
